Herbal Medicines For Anxiety and Insomnia

The anxiety normally goes away after the stressful event, especially if all has gone well. But sometimes anxious feelings feed on themselves and start to inter
Male Hormone Replacement Therapy: Andropause
Testosterone is a major player in the complex mielu of hormones (cellular messengers) that direct our bodies to function. In men who are over the age of 40, there is a significant drop in this level of this hormone. Until recently it was considered taboo to replace this important hormone. But today forward thinking anti-aging specialists realize what scientific studies over the past decade have taught us.
As with women who have gone through the change of life, replacement of their sexual hormones (estrogen, progesterone and testosterone) enact major health benefits such as osteoporosis prevention, heart disease prevention and increases in cognitive function. Likewise for older male subjects the benefits of the addition of testosterone under careful physician management is a crucial aspect of maintaining good health. I wish in this article to dispel some misconceptions about Testosterone Replacement Therapy and provide a list to readers of the benefits of this simple and safe treatment.
First of all there is overwhelming evidence in the scientific literature that testosterone does not cause prostate cancer. In actuality it is the unbalanced estrogen excess in man that is implicated in prostate cancer.
The caveat here is that once there is prostate cancer, testosterone which is an anabolic (building) hormone can promote cancer growth, but contrary to the popular belief, even within the medical field, it does not cause cancer. With advancing age Testosterone levels drop while estrogen levels rise and compete for binding sites on the prostate gland as well as other cells in the body causing a hormonal havoc.
Such problems as an increase in adipose tissue with midsection obesity, a decrease in muscle mass, generalized hormonal imbalances (growth hormone, estrogen, thyroid), depression, increased cholesterol and lipid dysfunction, glucose and insulin imbalance, decreased coronary artery elasticity, elevated blood pressure and loss of a feeling of well being result from low testosterone levels. Supplementing Testosterone in the appropriate candidates reverses these unwanted outcomes, but it is not as simple as taking a pill. There are enzymes in our body that can change exogenous testosterone into other undesirable hormones such as Estrodiol and DHT. Therefore, a physician that understands the balancing act and has the ability to monitor these other hormones is best to treat such a disorder.
Along with the correct replacement modality (cream, gel or patch) there are other considerations which halt the trend of testosterone conversion and these are usually supplemented along with testosterone. Such supplements are Saw palmetto, Zinc and Nettle extract to name a few. In a recent study of the Androderm patch after a 12-month period a depression score dropped by nearly one half with testosterone replacement alone. Again men with complaints of fatigue receiving testosterone in one study had symptoms of fatigue drop for 79% to 10%. A Medline medical literature search reveals many more positive outcomes of testosterone replacement. For those interested in finding out more about their bodies, there is a non-invasive home testing kit available at the Saleeby Longevity Institute which allows men to evaluate the levels of testosterone in circulation.

Natural Hormone Replacement Therapy: Is It All Good?
Thanks to Suzanne Somers, natural hormone replacement is gaining acceptance by women. Because natural hormones – estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone — are not patentable, the pharmaceutical industry is not happy about them. When women switch from synthetic to natural hormones, pharmaceutical industry profits are threatened.
Board certified internist Dr. Michael E. Platt, M.D. is not happy about Suzanne’s promotion of natural estrogen for another reason. Dr. Platt says estrogen, natural or synthetic, causes six kinds of cancer, and has statistics to back it up.
Author of an extraordinary new book, The Miracle of Bioidentical Hormones, Dr. Platt treats causes of illness while conventional, pharmaceutical industry-driven medicine treats symptoms.
He believes it’s proper to prescribe natural estrogen for severe menopause symptoms. Other than that, estrogen replacement is not necessary. After menopause, the body continues to produce estrogen.
But The Miracle of Bioidentical Hormones is about more than just estrogen. Dr. Platt’s favorite (and safest) hormone for men, women and children (yes, men and children) is natural progesterone. It’s an amazing hormone, which traditionally trained physicians seem to know little about because they have been trained to use synthetic hormone replacement.
For years, doctors have prescribed synthetic progesterone and synthetic estrogen derived from horses’ urine and now we are living with an epidemic of breast and other cancers.
Using actual patient histories, Dr. Platt explains how he treats common health issues such as PMS, fibromyalgia, ADD in children and adults, morbid obesity and more – with natural hormones and specially formulated dietary supplements.
Some of Dr. Platt’s solutions to common problems are not traditional, but they work. For example, if a woman has urinary incontinence he prescribes testosterone and an exercise regimen. He says the problem will clear up in one week if the patient follows his directions. And who would think that progesterone could cure a migraine headache? But Dr. Platt makes it happen. His success in treating ADD in children and adults with progesterone is amazing.
Traditional incontinence treatment utilizes drugs that don’t cure – they only alleviate symptoms. And they are a lot more costly and side-effect ridden than Dr. Platt’s solution. Traditional treatment of migraine headaches means using potent drugs with nasty side effects, and they don’t always work. Children diagnosed with ADD or ADHD are dosed with potent drugs that are mind and personality numbing.
Many people seek Dr. Platt’s advice as a last resort – conventional medicine hasn’t helped them. As you read his case histories, and see how he has helped “hopeless” cases, you get the sense that something is seriously lacking with our traditional health care system.
The Miracle of Bioidentical Hormones is a highly readable, informative, eye-opening book. Read it if you are open to untraditional solutions to some difficult health problems. You will be glad you did.
Kidney Disease – A Common Cause of Death Among Toy Poodles
Based on surveys, the leading causes of death among Toy Poodles are old age and kidney disease. Yes kidney disease! While it affects lots of people around the world, kidney disease is also common in dogs such as Toy Poodles.
The kidneys are organs that filter blood to maintain the balance of chemicals, remove the waste products and eliminate them as urine. The kidneys also regulate blood pressure, regulate the production of body fluid and produce hormones that stimulate the production of red blood cells.
Since the kidneys play various roles for the continued health of humans and animals alike, a malfunction in this organ can cause various problems. Canine kidney failure or kidney disease occurs when the kidney ceases to function properly and becomes unable to eliminate harmful wastes from the bloodstream. Kidney disease can either be acute or chronic. Acute kidney failure is an abrupt decline in kidney function that results to poisoning or external toxins. On the other hand, chronic kidney failure is a kidney disease that develops over a period of time.
Increase in water consumption as well as increased urine production are the early clinical signs of kidney failure in dogs. As the disease progresses, more signs can be seen. These includes loss of appetite, depression, vomiting, diarrhea, bad breath and ulcers in the mouth.
To diagnose and determine the disease, urinalysis and blood tests such as blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and blood creatinine are necessary. To treat the disease, large quantities of intravenous fluids are given to flush out the kidneys. This process, called diuresis, helps stimulate the kidney cells to function again. Other initial treatments include drugs to control vomiting and diarrhea, management of blood electrolyte abnormalities and management of anemia.
Diet and nutrition also plays an important role in treating the disease. A low-protein, low-phosphorus and low-sodium diet is advisable to help regulate or slow down the progression of the disease. As much as possible, give diet that is specifically formulated for your dog’s needs. Foods specifically formulated for dogs with kidney disease has a reduced amount of protein, minerals and salt.
Added advice to all dog owners, puppy proof your home before Fido arrives. Make sure that household chemicals even laundry detergents and bleach should be out of your dog’s reach. Regular check up is also advisable especially in adult dogs to detect kidney disease early.
Face Care With Effective Anti Aging Products
Most of us are too busy juggling the demands of our hectic lifestyles to bother about the havoc being wreaked on our body, particularly the part which suffers most from harsh atmospheric elements such as sunlight and wind-your skin. Tell-tale signs of ageing as well as wear and tear show first on your facial skin, thus making face care with anti-ageing products a vital component of your beauty regimen. Research has shown that facial skin is generally prone to problems such as wrinkles, acne, dark circles, blemishes, open pores, etc. Most of these can be successfully treated with anti-ageing products that erase the signs of ageing and are essential face care agents.
Anti Wrinkle Treatment
Anti-wrinkle treatments and products available on the market today offer greater variety in terms of methods as well as success rates. This is due to the immense medical and technological advances that have occurred over the last few years. Long considered to be symbolic of the ageing process, wrinkles are likely to be banished from the human face, thanks to the multitude of effective anti-wrinkle treatments available. These treatments range from inexpensive options such as chemical peels and topical creams to complicated and expensive laser treatments.
Dark Circle Treatment
Dark circles under your eyes are unsightly reminders of sleepless nights, fatigue and stress. These physical reflections of psychological conditions can themselves cause a lot of emotional distress. Lifestyle changes such as getting adequate sleep, exercising and eliminating stress can greatly help in reducing dark circles. These long-term solutions need to be supplemented with external treatments that include laser treatments, topical creams and chemical peels that are specifically formulated to treat the under-eye area.
Lip Care Products
Your lips are the most expressive part of your face and the most vulnerable to changes in the environment. Your lips are the first to be affected by heat or cold and need to be protected from the weather. Parched and rough or chapped lips need to be treated with the right kind of lip care including moisturizing lotions that also provide SPF protection. It is essential to drink plenty of water for soft and supple lips.
Acne Treatment
Acne affects your skin and also has a negative impact on your self-esteem and the overall quality of your life. The signs of acne usually appear during the teenage years and vanish once you are in your twenties, although adult acne is not uncommon. Apart from hormones, acne can also be caused or aggravated by the use of harsh facial cleansers, oil-based make up and steroid medications. Topical acne treatment includes lotions, creams and gels consisting of benzoyl peroxide and other antiseptic agents.
Dental Care Products
Your teeth are reliable indicators of your overall health and well-being. Good oral hygiene consists of healthy dental practices such as brushing you teeth twice a day with fluoride-based toothpaste, flossing after meals, cutting down on carbonated drinks as well as visiting your dentist periodically. Dental treatments range from regular maintenance to laser dentistry for cosmetic reasons.
Face Moisturizers
Regularly moisturizing and hydrating your skin combats the harmful effects of ageing and environmental pollutants. The effects of dry skin can be countered by ultra-nourishing moisturizers that boost collagen-production and restore the natural elasticity and firmness of your skin. Moisturizers with high SPF are beneficial if your skin has suffered from excessive UV exposure.
